Great Dog Training Tips by Kurt Lambert
No need to send your dog to a dog training school. They are overrated, and quite frankly, a waste of money. Why shell out hundreds of dollars when you can teach your dog the same things for free? Here are some tips that you may want to try on your dog:
1) Set early on things the dog can/cannot do. For example, if you let a puppy get away with a bad habit, chances are the bad habit will continue as the dog gets older. You must let the dog know that you set the rules, and some things are off limits.
2) Never try a training technique that does not feel natural to you. Dogs have the ability to sense hesitation in people, and if your dog senses that in you it will completely ignore your commands. Make sure whatever training you do, you feel completely comfortable with.
3) Use a short leash as a puppy. The puppy will try to run farther than the leash will extend at first, but after time it will start remembering it cannot run far off without being pulled back in. The short leash will give you more control over the dog.
4) Be kind and gentle with your dog. Dogs have feelings too, and love the feeling of being loved, and getting rewards like dog biscuits. If you are mean to your dog, it may develop a mean streak down the road.
5) Let your dog know when it is okay and not okay to bark. If you have your dog outside and it starts barking uncontrollably, you may want to consider a bark-control collar. It is a special collar that sends tones for approval and disapproval to the dog from a remote control. This will help your dog also learn rights and wrongs.
An important thing to remember is consistency. Your dog will be able to learn much quicker if you are consistent with your training techniques. Also, you want to remember to add in a good amount of play time, as it helps your dog bond with you.
