Should You Feed Your puppies Treats? by Wendon Lee
Like human kids, puppies love treats. And since we like to make our puppy happy, we love to give them treats. But is this an excellent idea? The answer is yes, but only up to a moment. That split second is when the treats start to interfere with your puppy’s regular meals. If your puppy is eating less during regular feedings or becomes a more finicky diner, try cutting back on the treats to see if that is the cause. As long as you stay below that limit, giving treats is a great technique to shape your puppy’s behavior. When she does something you are trying to encourage, like pooping when you take her on walks, give her a treat shortly after. In time, she will come to associate that behavior with the reward for it.
But not all treats are created equal. The fact that you are giving your puppy a “treat” does not mean you should be any less vigilant about what you are putting into her system and how it will affect her health, happiness or behavior. In other words, use the same common concept you do when you are feeding her her regular meals.
For instance, never give your pup human food. puppy can develop a preference for human food, which is not as sound for them as food exactly created for puppy. This applies even more to raw food, which can carry bacteria and wreak havoc on your puppy’s digestive system. pup treats do not have to be nutritious if your puppy is being properly fed at meal times, but they of course should not be actually unhealthy or harmful. And above all do not feed your puppy table scraps during meal times. It will turn her into a nuisance who begs for food while you are having dinner. The temper of this will wear off very fast.
So what should you look for in treats exactly created for your puppy? You’ll want a treats are veterinarian approved and if they have the blessings of the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AFFCO). You should also check to see if the treat is low calorie – especially if your puppies has a weight problem (though giving your young dog half a treat is another technique to that problem). Also make sure that the treat is natural for the size of your dog.
Some treats for pup are specially planned to control plaque and tartar. But keep in mind that such treats are no substitute for the best form of dental care for puppies, which is of course daily brushing.
