The prey of foxes in the wild by John Pettifer
Foxes feed on a great assortment of food, as studies have shown. It’s a grave misconception to think that foxes live on rabbits, poultry and game. Any fox will take all of these as opportunity offers and when the rabbit was more common, it was a preferred catch. But the fox in actuality has no such limited diet.
Voles, mice, frogs, carrion, worms and insects are given high priority on his food list, as they probably always have and will. Hares are also enjoyed, both the brown hare and the mountain hare and any fox will eat stoat when the option is stoat or an empty plate. Birds of all kinds are slaughtered as opportunity offers, right up to large grouses. Chickens are slaughtered when people are thoughtless enough to gift a means of entrance to the poultry pen. Foxes don’t need much invitation and a secure chicken house will usually keep them out!
A fox catches more insects than is usually realised. Allow a path to a food supply, foxes will eat cake or catfood. Fruit is also happily consumed; blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and whatever else that takes their fancy.
One of the practical things that the fox does for farmers is in destroying rats, and it might be true to say that, in rural areas, he’s a very handy animal. One study saw a female fox carry sixty-three rats to her cubs in 10 nights of hunting, which were absolutely devoured, with very little remaining.
In countless remoter parts of the UK, the fox is a issue as a predator on lambs. It’s hard to keep a fox away from lambs as you can from hens, so they can be annoying animals. However we know actually little about the way in which foxes kill lambs, and this is a feature which is worth investigating further. It is no use just counting lamb carcasses at the entrance of a fox earth; the fox might have not been responsible for their death. At the entrance to some dens, reports have found that the lambs found had died naturally or been died at or shortly after birth. It is intriguing to see what foxes are consuming, although this doesn’t necessarily establish what a fox has been slaying.
An easy way to find out what a fox has been eating is to discover the den and just look at the bodies scattered at it. Unusually for such a cunning beast, foxes have no problem with advertising the opening to their den by leaving the carcasses of deceased prey.If prey is in abundance, a selection of body parts will be lying about. If prey is less plentiful foxes and their little ones are more likely to eat all of it so leftovers will be harder to recognise.
