* Or synthetic
What is natural Vitamin E?
* A collection of eight chemically unique compounds derived from plants that include four tocopherols and four tocotrienols
What is synthetic Vitamin E?
* A more commonly used and less expensive compound called alpha-tocopherol
Dr. Bicks prefers to use the natural Vitamin E in Life’s Abundance pet food simply because:
* The synthetic form of Vitamin E is NOT as active or easily absorbed as the natural form of Vitamin E
* The molecular structure of vitamin E determines how well the body can utilize it
Researchers found in human trials that proteins in the liver specifically select the natural form of vitamin E and very much ignore the synthetic form. Scientists in a Japanese study learned it took three times the amount of synthetic vitamin E to equal the blood levels of natural vitamin E. United States researchers learned that body tissues and blood retained far higher levels of natural Vitamin E versus the synthetic. Furthermore, synthetic alpha-tocopherol Vitamin E has half the vitamin activity of the natural alpha-tocopherol Vitamin E.
The key to understanding differences in natural and synthetic Vitamin E is in how the body absorbs these two types differently on the molecular level. Animals use the natural form of Vitamin E more readily and efficiently thus resulting in greater absorption for better health results. Many Pet Food Manufacturers simply use the synthetic Vitamin E because it is cheaper, but it is not healthier for pets in the long run. Dr. Bicks concentrates on the health and longevity of companion animals and chooses to use the Natural Vitamin E in her pet food formulation. If you read pet food labels carefully, you will find many pet food manufacturers use the cheaper form or synthetic Vitamin E in their pet food formulations.
What should you look for on pet food labels to be assured the formulation contains “Natural Vitamin E:”
* Natural Vitamin E is listed as a-tocopherol acetate, d-alpha tocopherol, d-alpha tocopheryl acetate OR d-alpha tocopheryl succinate.
Synthetic form of Vitamin E are labeled with a “dl-” prefix.
